Sarasota is a coastal Sarasota County city, and the utility map looks completely different from Tampa or even neighboring Manatee County. Florida Power & Light handles electric across all of Sarasota County, not TECO. Water depends on whether you're inside the City of Sarasota limits or in unincorporated Sarasota County, including most of Lakewood Ranch on the south county side. Gas service exists but is limited, mostly Peoples Gas inside the older central neighborhoods. Internet is a Spectrum and Frontier story, with fiber rolling out faster downtown than out east. If you're closing on a home in Siesta Key, downtown Sarasota, Arlington Park, the Lakewood Ranch portion that crosses into Sarasota County, or anywhere along the bay, this is the call sheet for setting up utilities in Sarasota.

Electric in Sarasota | Florida Power & Light (FPL)

FPL is the only Sarasota electric provider and covers all of Sarasota County, including Siesta Key, Longboat Key (south end), Lakewood Ranch, Venice, and North Port. New service is set up online or by phone, with same-day or next-business-day activation for most existing addresses.

FPL rates in 2026 are competitive with the rest of the state, and the storm hardening work after Hurricane Ian moved a lot of the Sarasota-area distribution lines underground. Outage frequency on the mainland dropped meaningfully after that build-out. Siesta Key and Longboat Key are still on bridge feeders, which is the one part of the area where multi-day outages still happen during a major storm.

Water and Sewer | City of Sarasota or Sarasota County

Inside the City of Sarasota limits, water and sewer are run by the City of Sarasota Utilities Department. Outside city limits, in unincorporated Sarasota County, the provider is Sarasota County Public Utilities. The two systems have separate bills, separate phone numbers, and slightly different new-service paperwork. Lakewood Ranch sits in unincorporated Sarasota County (and partly in Manatee), so almost no Lakewood Ranch home is on City of Sarasota water.

Sarasota County Public Utilities

If your Sarasota water bill looks unusually high in a new home, the most common cause is a leaky irrigation line on a separate meter. Both the city and the county will send a tech for a leak inspection on request.

Gas in Sarasota | TECO Peoples Gas

Peoples Gas covers parts of Sarasota, mostly the older central neighborhoods near downtown and Arlington Park, plus a few newer master-planned subdivisions. Most Sarasota new construction, especially in Lakewood Ranch and Palmer Ranch, is electric-only. Verify with the seller disclosure or appliance list before you assume gas service is on the property.

Trash and Recycling | City of Sarasota or Sarasota County

Inside city limits, the City of Sarasota handles trash and recycling pickup, billed quarterly on a separate utility statement. Outside city limits, Sarasota County contracts pickup through Waste Management and bills annually on the property tax statement.

Internet Providers in Sarasota

Spectrum has the broadest cable footprint across Sarasota and unincorporated Sarasota County. Frontier fiber covers parts of downtown and Arlington Park, with rollout into Palmer Ranch and the Lakewood Ranch overlap area moving in stages. T-Mobile Home Internet and Verizon 5G Home both work well across most of the area.

1-855-552-9691 · frontier.com · Fiber in select downtown and central neighborhoods; check exact address before signing.

A few Sarasota notes

Sarasota utility companies sit inside an unusually clean electric setup, FPL only, and a messy water setup. The city limit line decides which water company you call and which trash bill you get. A house on the south side of Bahia Vista can be on city water while the house across the street is on county water. Pull the parcel record before you call to set up service.

Coastal Sarasota addresses, especially Siesta Key, Lido Key, and the bayfront west of US-41, sit in FEMA flood zones. Pull the flood zone from the federal FEMA flood map before you write an offer. Flood insurance costs can swing the monthly carrying cost on a Siesta Key home by hundreds of dollars depending on the elevation certificate.

A Vreeland Real Estate agent can pull the FPL outage history, the FEMA flood zone, the school zone, and the Sarasota County CDD list for any Sarasota address before you write an offer. That's the kind of due diligence a Vreeland Real Estate agent who actually works the south end of Tampa Bay does.

Common questions about Sarasota utilities

Why is FPL the electric provider in Sarasota instead of TECO?+
FPL covers Sarasota, Manatee, and most of Florida south of the Hillsborough County line. TECO's footprint stops at the Hillsborough County border. Every Sarasota address is on FPL, including Siesta Key, Lakewood Ranch, and Venice.
Is Lakewood Ranch on City of Sarasota water?+
No. Lakewood Ranch is unincorporated, split between Sarasota and Manatee counties, so it runs on county utilities. The City of Sarasota only serves addresses inside the city limits, generally west of I-75.
How long does FPL take to start service in Sarasota?+
Same-day or next-business-day for most addresses. New construction in Lakewood Ranch or Palmer Ranch can take longer because of meter installation timing. Call seven to ten business days ahead for new builds.
Do Siesta Key homes have gas service?+
Almost none. Siesta Key was built out before Peoples Gas extended distribution to the barrier islands, and the cost to bring lines across the bridge has never penciled. Most Siesta Key homes are electric-only with optional propane for outdoor kitchens or pool heat.
What's the fastest internet I can get in Sarasota?+
Frontier fiber where it's available, with speeds to 5 Gbps. Spectrum cable runs to 1 Gbps in most addresses. Fiber rollout downtown is moving faster than rollout in Lakewood Ranch, so check at the street level before signing.
How much should I budget for Sarasota utilities?+
On a 2,000 sq ft home, plan on $250 to $400 for FPL electric in summer, $50 to $90 for water and sewer, $30 to $50 for gas if you have it, $70 to $100 for internet. Trash is on the county tax bill or city quarterly statement depending on your address.
