10 Reasons to Move to Sarasota, Florida

Cultured, coastal, and a little richer than it lets on.

Region Tampa Bay (Sarasota County) Main ZIP 34236

Sarasota's the rare Florida city where the cultural amenities outpace the population. The opera, the ballet, the Ringling Museum, and Burns Court's indie cinema all sit inside a city that barely cracks 60,000 people. Add Siesta Key's quartz-sand beach and you've got the formula for the fastest-growing county in the state.

10 Reasons to Move to Sarasota

What we tell every buyer who's weighing the move.

01

Siesta Key Beach and the quartz sand

Siesta's sand is 99% quartz, which means it stays cool to walk on even in August. Voted the #1 beach in the U.S. multiple times.

02

Cultural depth other Florida cities don't have

Sarasota Opera, the Sarasota Orchestra, the Asolo Repertory Theatre, the Ringling Museum, and Florida Studio Theatre. Very few cities under 100,000 people have this much cultural infrastructure.

03

Downtown Sarasota is genuinely walkable

Main Street, Palm Avenue, the bayfront. A real downtown with restaurants, galleries, and condos that residents actually use.

04

A-rated schools and a strong charter network

Pine View, Riverview High, the Sarasota Military Academy, and ODA on the private side. Sarasota County's school grades consistently outperform the Florida average.

05

The bayfront redevelopment is real

The Bay Park is a 53-acre waterfront park reshaping the bay edge. Phase one is open. By 2028 it'll be one of the biggest urban park projects on the Gulf Coast.

06

New money and old money live side by side

Old Sarasota families on Bird Key and St. Armands. Newer wealth in Lakewood Ranch and Longboat Key. The result is a city with deep philanthropic culture and a cleaner kept-up feel than most Florida tourist towns.

07

Lakewood Ranch is the master-planned anchor 20 minutes east

Lakewood Ranch is the #1 selling master-planned community in the country. Newer homes, top schools, and access to both Sarasota and Bradenton.

08

Lower density than Tampa or Naples

Sarasota County built less, slower than its peers. Even in growing neighborhoods you'll find 70-foot lot widths and tree-lined streets.

09

The boating and fishing are first-class

Sarasota Bay's protected, shallow flats fishing is among the best on the Gulf Coast. Public ramps at Ken Thompson Park, Centennial Park, and Marina Jack.

10

Easy north-south access on I-75

Sarasota's not isolated. Tampa's an hour north on I-75. Naples is two hours south. The airport (SRQ) is small but commercial, and you can be at TPA in under 90 minutes.

Living in Sarasota, day to day

The Bird Key, Lakewood Ranch, Siesta Key corridor is where most early showings land. Prices step down as you move out from there, and the right neighborhood at the wrong budget still ends in a bad fit, so we always start with what your week needs to look like before we open the MLS. If those first three don't work for you, Longboat Key, Downtown / Burns Court, Lido Key / St. Armands round out the second tier.

School zones move Sarasota pricing more than any other single factor. The top-rated boundaries carry a premium that holds even when the broader market softens. Magnet and IB programs pull from outside their home zones, but a homestead exemption ties you to the address you live in. We pull the boundary map for every buyer with kids before the first showing.

Insurance is the budget line that catches new buyers off guard. Florida's homeowners market has been turbulent since 2022, premiums have climbed, and carriers underwrite hard on roof age, electrical panels, and four-point inspections. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation publishes current data. Pull a real quote on any house you're serious about before the inspection contingency expires.

The pace shifts in summer. Most of Sarasota starts the day earlier from June through September because the afternoon thunderstorms come in around 3 p.m. like clockwork. You learn to plan around them. Once you do, January feels like a gift.

Cost of living in Sarasota

Sarasota's cost of living runs about 8% above the national average, with housing the biggest driver. The county has more million-dollar transactions per capita than almost any other Florida county. Property taxes hover around 1.05% of assessed value. Insurance has climbed sharply since 2022.

Weather and seasons

Sarasota winters are some of the nicest in the state. December through February averages 56 to 74. Summers run 75 to 91. The Gulf side gets the standard hurricane exposure plus the storm surge risk that comes with a flat coastline. Flood insurance is non-negotiable in any A or V zone.

Sarasota FAQ

The questions buyers ask us most often.

Is Sarasota a good place to live?+

It depends on what you're optimizing for. Cultural buyers, retirees who want something more than a country club, families chasing top-rated schools, and second-home owners. If your priorities line up with that list, Sarasota fits. If they don't, one of the other Florida cities probably fits better, and we'll tell you that on the call rather than pretend a misfit will work.

Is Sarasota walkable?+

Walkability varies block by block. Downtown areas and the older neighborhoods near commercial corridors score highest. Newer master-planned tracts score lower because they're built for cars. Walk Score publishes a number for every address in Sarasota. We pull one for any buyer who tells us walkability matters.

What are the best neighborhoods in Sarasota?+

Top three for most buyers: Bird Key, Lakewood Ranch, Siesta Key. The full list: Bird Key (Manmade island between Sarasota and Lido. Waterfront single-family homes, deepwater dockage.); Lakewood Ranch (Master-planned community east of I-75. Top schools, golf, family-heavy.); Siesta Key (Beachfront and bayfront homes. Quartz sand, tourist energy in season.); Longboat Key (Long, narrow barrier island. Wealthier, quieter than Siesta. Country club density.); Downtown / Burns Court (Walkable, restaurants, indie cinema, restored bungalows.); Lido Key / St. Armands (St. Armands Circle's shopping district, Lido Beach, mid-century cottage feel.). Each price point sits at a different life stage, which is why a 15-minute scoping call beats a long browse on Zillow.

How fast is the Sarasota real estate market?+

Days-on-market and price reductions both swing month to month, so we won't publish a single number here that goes stale. Tampa Bay as a whole has settled out of the 2021 frenzy. On a scoping call we'll pull the current week's data for the zip codes you're shopping.

What should I see in person before I buy in Sarasota?+

Three things: the neighborhood at three different times (morning, weekday rush, weekend night), the school zone if a kid's involved, and the commute on a Tuesday morning if you'll be in-office. Listing photos and street view both miss traffic, noise, and what a block sounds like at 9 p.m.
