Miami splits its utilities between three governments: the county runs water and sewer, the city runs trash and FPL runs electric. The water account is the slow one, with a three-to-five-business-day processing window, so start there. Here's the list.

Electric in Miami | Florida Power & Light (FPL)

Florida Power & Light (FPL) is the electric utility for Miami. Start, stop or move service online or by phone.

Water and Sewer | Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD)

Water and sewer in Miami come from the county, not the city. Miami-Dade WASD opens new accounts through its online self-service application; you'll need a government photo ID and proof of ownership or a lease, and the county says new service requests are typically processed in three to five business days. The Customer Care Center runs Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; the 24-hour emergency line is 305-274-9272.

Gas in Miami | Florida City Gas

Florida City Gas lists Miami-Dade County as a service area. Gas isn't at every address and a lot of Miami homes are all-electric, so confirm the line exists before you buy gas appliances.

Trash and Recycling | City of Miami Department of Solid Waste

Inside Miami city limits the city's Department of Solid Waste collects garbage and recycling for single-family homes; you can also reach it through 311. Condos and multifamily buildings often use private haulers, so ask the association.
